Lt Col William Cortez

I received sad news on Friday night. A fellow American here in Liberia with me, my roommate in Monrovia, died of a tragic accident. He slipped and fell off the rooftop patio at the apartment and died on impact. He was just out at my team site on Friday afternoon for the day and flew back to Monrovia that evening. I am blessed to have seen him on his final day on earth. I know, without a doubt, that God took him home to heaven.
On Sunday, I drove into Monrovia to be here with the guys and help out. We went through his room and inventoried all of his personal effects. This morning at 8am, we had a memorial service at the UN HQ in Monrovia. Tomorrow, an American C17 will be flying into Monrovia to pick up his body and take it back to the states. He will be buried in Arlington Nat'l Cemetery. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. He was 52 years old.

Please keep the Cortez family in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the rest of the American team here in Liberia as we cope with this tragic loss.

Rest in Peace, Sir.

Lt Col William Cortez
(1958-2010)
